Kontos Chef Demetrios’ Greek Recipes Featured in Halal Consumer

Greek recipes are healthy and delicious for a reason

Kontos Foods Corporate Executive Chef Demetrios Haralambatos recently explored Greece Cuisine in Halal Consumer issue 54. Halal Consumer is from the Islamic Food & Nutrition Council of America, commonly known as IFANCA.org.

Chef Demetrios’ feature story talks about how Greek cuisine evolved in a country made up of 6,000 islands and islets. He discusses the many health benefits of the Greek diet. Small portion size is one such attribute. Did you know that Mezze means “small plates”? In Greece, he writes, it’s not uncommon for people to order up to 12 different dishes for one meal. Diversity is another aspect of Greek cuisine. If you make spanakopita in the south, it’s likely to have leeks and spinach. While a Northern Greece recipe will be pure spinach.

What does Halal mean?

The story also includes many delicious Greek recipes that people following a diet of Halal, an Arabic word that means “permissible.” When applied to food, it means food or drink is permissible according to Islamic law. For many years, Kontos Foods has partnered with IFANCA to bring products to market through its Halal Certification program.
